Specifications

A-286 is the stainless fastener alloy the collected NASA fastener-design prose calls "the best fastener material for aerospace usage" among stainless steels: it is not susceptible to stress corrosion, and the table gives it a -423 to 1200 °F useful design temperature limit with up to 220 ksi ultimate tensile strength, passivated per MIL-S-5002. The same prose sets production expectations honestly — A286 is usually produced only up to 160-ksi strength, with 220-ksi A286 fasteners available on special order — so strength above 160 ksi is a sourcing line, not a stock assumption.

Designation A-286 (A286) precipitation-hardened austenitic stainless steel
Useful design temperature limit -423 to 1200 °F (collected NASA fastener-material table, °F verbatim)
Ultimate tensile strength, room temperature Up to 220 ksi (collected table, ksi verbatim); usually produced only up to 160-ksi strength, 220-ksi fasteners on special order (collected prose)
Surface treatment per source table Passivated per MIL-S-5002
Stress-corrosion behaviour Not susceptible to stress corrosion (collected NASA prose; the higher-strength 180–220 ksi stainless space is otherwise filled by stress-corrosion-susceptible 17-7PH / 17-4PH)
Positioning vs 17-4PH / 17-7PH A286 trades the PH-martensitic grades' stress-corrosion sensitivity for austenitic toughness across the wider -423 to 1200 °F window

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (A-286 Fasteners) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantities and lead times for this family are confirmed at quotation — send your sizes, grades and quantities on the RFQ and the quote will carry a firm schedule. Sample availability is confirmed with the quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

A286 or 17-4PH for a high-strength stainless joint?

The collected NASA prose is direct: of the stainless steels, A286 is the best fastener material for aerospace usage because it is not susceptible to stress corrosion, while the higher-strength 180–220 ksi stainless fasteners are usually 17-7PH or 17-4PH, which are stress-corrosion susceptible. If the joint sees aggressive environment plus high strength, A286 is the collected-source answer.

Can A286 fasteners be coated?

A zinc-flake coating reference treats precipitation-hardened stainless steels including A286 as coatable and notes zinc flake is the safe choice where added protection is needed, since PH stainless hardened above 1100 MPa is susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement under electroplating. Quote your strength level and coating intent on the RFQ.

What should an RFQ for A-286 fasteners state?

State the designation (A-286), fastener type and thread sizes, strength basis (160 ksi production or 220 ksi special order per the collected source), the service temperature range, and surface treatment (passivated per MIL-S-5002 in the collected table). Commercial terms are confirmed at quotation.
