Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing for fasteners — immersion in molten zinc forms a thick metallurgically bonded coating that outlasts plating by decades in outdoor and coastal exposure, with oversize-tapped nuts and the coating-process rules that high-strength grades impose.

Specifications

Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) is the heavy-duty corrosion finish: the fastener is submerged in a bath of molten zinc, and the coating that forms is metallurgically bonded to the steel — not deposited, grown into it. Compared with electroplate, the layer is much thicker and carries more zinc per unit volume, which is why galvanized structural fasteners are the default for outdoor, coastal and continuously wet exposure with decades of maintenance-free life. The thickness cuts both ways: threads need clearance, so nuts are tapped oversize to fit galvanized bolts, and in structural bolting the added friction under the head is why hot-dip galvanized bolts get a rotational-capacity (ROCAP) test. Grade rules matter too — because of hydrogen-embrittlement risk, F3125 Grade A490 and equivalent high-strength quenched-and-tempered bolts are not galvanized; they take dip-spin zinc/aluminum coatings instead. Where threads must stay clean without overtapping, mechanical galvanizing is the cold-process alternative, at slightly lower corrosion resistance.

Process Immersion in molten zinc; coating is metallurgically bonded to the steel (spin galvanizing for small parts)
Coating character Much thicker than electroplate, with more zinc per unit volume — marginally more corrosion resistant than mechanical galvanizing
Corrosion protection Decades of maintenance-free outdoor service; the standard call for external steel in coastal and wet environments
Thread fit Coating thickens the thread — nuts are tapped oversize to fit galvanized bolts
Installation Higher friction than plated bolts; structural hot-dip galvanized bolts require a rotational-capacity (ROCAP) test
Grade restriction Not for F3125 Grade A490 / equivalent high-strength Q&T bolts (hydrogen embrittlement) — dip-spin zinc/aluminum coatings (Geomet®, Magni® class) are the substitute
Alternative Mechanical galvanizing — cold tumbling process, cleaner threads and easier installation, slightly less corrosion resistant
Documents Applied to the appropriate ASTM specification process; certificates of compliance available with orders

Materials

  • Carbon steel fasteners
  • Structural bolts (F3125 A325 Type 1 class)
  • Anchor bolts and large hardware

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (Hot-Dip Galvanizing) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is per batch, carried with the fastener order. Finishing run adds 5–10 days to the fastener lead time. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Why are nuts for galvanized bolts tapped oversize?

Because hot-dip galvanizing grows the part. The molten-zinc coating is thick compared with electroplate, and it deposits on threads the same as everywhere else, so an as-galvanized bolt no longer fits a standard-tapped nut. The mating nut is tapped oversize to leave clearance for the coating. That clearance is also why torque values differ on galvanized assemblies — added friction under the head and in the threads changes the torque-tension relationship, which is why structural work tests rotational capacity on hot-dip galvanized bolts rather than assuming plated-bolt values.

What is the MOQ and lead time for this finish?

Finishing runs per batch carried with the fastener order and adds 5–10 days to the fastener lead time. Coated parts follow the finish line that processes them, so confirm the exact schedule against quantity and finish class at quotation.

What should an RFQ for this finish state?

State the base fastener (grade, diameter, length), the coating standard and class (or the process plus thickness/color requirement where no standard callout exists), any salt-spray or friction requirement, and quantity per size — plus destination country and required documents such as a mill test certificate.
