Specifications

Self-tapping thread inserts are solid inserts with external cutting features — cutting slots or cutting bores — that cut or form their own thread in the receiving hole during installation, reducing or eliminating the need to pre-tap the base material. They are used in aluminum, soft metals, engineering plastics and repair applications where a stronger, more durable internal thread is needed. The collected installation guide tabulates a full M3–M12 reference: insert outside diameter, insert length, reference pilot-hole diameter and depth, and a per-size torque note. The guide's own caveat travels with the table: values are engineering starting points, not universal rules — softer materials take the lower end of the pilot-hole range to improve grip, harder materials the upper end to reduce driving torque and avoid galling, cracking or insert damage — and the product drawing or datasheet governs production use.

Construction Solid insert with external cutting features (cutting slots, cutting bores or other external cutting structures); cuts or forms its own thread, reducing or eliminating pre-tapping
Thread size range M3–M12 in the collected installation table (common compact-automation sizes are M3/M4/M5/M6; machine structures M8 and larger)
M3 row Insert OD 5.0 mm · length 6 mm · pilot hole Ø 4.6–4.8 mm · depth 8 mm · low, controlled torque (compact brackets, small housings)
M4 row Insert OD 6.5 mm · length 8 mm · pilot hole Ø 6.0–6.2 mm · depth 10 mm (small covers, light-duty mounts, compact automation)
M5 row Insert OD 8.0 mm · length 10 mm · pilot hole Ø 7.3–7.6 mm · depth 12 mm (medium covers, fixture accessories, mounting plates)
M6 row Insert OD 10.0 mm · length 14 mm · pilot hole Ø 8.9–9.4 mm · depth 16 mm (medium-duty brackets, handles, frequently serviced joints)
M8 row Insert OD 12.0 mm · length 15 mm · pilot hole Ø 10.9–11.4 mm · depth 17 mm (stronger brackets, machine guards, aluminum frame accessories)
M10 row Insert OD 14.0 mm · length 18 mm · pilot hole Ø 12.9–13.4 mm · depth 20 mm (heavier fixtures, machine bases)
M12 row Insert OD 16.0 mm · length 22 mm · pilot hole Ø 14.9–15.4 mm · depth 24 mm (larger repair points, load-bearing structures, heavy-duty assemblies)
Pilot-hole discipline Too small: excessive installation torque, cracked material, deformed insert, damaged cutting thread. Too large: insert spins, loses pull-out strength, fails under vibration (collected guide)
Torque discipline Excessive driving torque damages insert, tool or material; torque-controlled tools preferred in production; if the insert suddenly becomes hard to drive, stop — do not force it
Table status Engineering starting points, not universal rules — values vary by insert series, manufacturer, material, surface treatment and installation method; the product drawing/datasheet governs (collected guide caveat, verbatim basis)
MOQ / lead time Not owner-confirmed for this family — confirmed at quotation

Materials

  • Stainless steel
  • Carbon steel
  • Brass (material per collected guide; confirm required insert material on the RFQ)

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (Self-Tapping Thread Inserts) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantities and lead times for this family are confirmed at quotation — send your sizes, grades and quantities on the RFQ and the quote will carry a firm schedule. Sample availability is confirmed with the quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Are the tabulated pilot-hole ranges one-size-fits-all?

No — the collected guide prints the caveat with the table: values are engineering starting points that vary by insert series, manufacturer, material, surface treatment and installation method. Softer materials take the lower end of the range for grip; harder materials the upper end to cut driving torque and avoid galling or cracking. Quote your parent material on the RFQ so the pilot-hole recommendation is matched to it.

Self-tapping insert or a tapped hole + wire insert?

A self-tapping insert skips the separate tapping operation — it cuts its own external engagement in a pilot hole — which suits aluminum plates, cast parts, plastic housings and repair work where pre-tapping is the bottleneck. A wire insert preserves the screw size inside an STI thread and is the conventional stripped-thread repair; the wire-insert page covers that path.

What should an RFQ for self-tapping inserts state?

State the insert type, internal thread size (M3–M12 reference range), insert material, parent material and its condition (aluminum, cast, plastic), through vs blind hole, and installation tooling available. Commercial terms are confirmed at quotation.
