Wedge Anchors (Torque-Controlled Expansion)

Torque-controlled wedge expansion anchors in the M6–M24 mechanical family band, effective embedment 40–150 mm — drill, clean, torque-set, load immediately. Widely qualified for cracked concrete and seismic work; hole-diameter tolerance is the governing installation risk.

Specifications

The wedge anchor is the default torque-controlled mechanical expansion anchor: a threaded stud with an expansion clip that wedges against the hole wall as the nut is torqued. Setting is immediate — drill, remove dust, insert, torque, load — and the family is widely qualified for cracked concrete and seismic conditions, which is why most repetitive medium-duty details default to it. Its governing risk is geometric, not metallurgical: the clamp load is a function of hole-diameter tolerance and applied torque, so an oversize or under-cleaned hole leaves the wedge loose before any load arrives, and overtorque can strip the concrete locally. Capacity in the practical band sits slightly above a comparable concrete screw anchor of the same diameter, because the wedge bears on the concrete rather than cutting a thread into it. Qualification runs under ACI 355.2 (US) and ETAs issued under EAD 330232 (Europe).

Type Torque-controlled mechanical expansion anchor (wedge type) — torque sets the expansion, load applied immediately
Family size band M6–M24 (mechanical expansion family band; individual products vary)
Effective embedment (h_ef) 40–150 mm family band; capacity values are product- and size-specific from the ETA
Capacity positioning Slightly above a comparable screw anchor of the same diameter — capacity bears on the hole wall, steel is not the limiting mode in this range
Cracked vs uncracked Concrete cone breakout: k_ucr,N = 11.0 vs k_cr,N = 7.7 — a cracked-concrete cone value is about 70% of the uncracked figure; quote the value that matches your slab condition
Governing risk Hole-diameter tolerance and torque discipline: overtorque strips the concrete locally, undertorque leaves the anchor loose before load
Qualification ACI 355.2-24 (US); ETA under EAD 330232 (Europe); design to ACI 318-25 Ch. 17 or EN 1992-4:2018
Seismic Widely qualified across the mechanical family — the standard choice in many seismic details; verify category (C1/C2) on the specific report
Installation Drill plus dust removal; torque-set on installation; immediate loading — no cure window
Relative installed cost Low to medium; adds a washer and a torque pass over a screw anchor
MOQ / lead time 500–1,000 pieces; standard production 15–30 days

Frequently asked questions

When does a wedge anchor beat a concrete screw anchor?

When the load is higher, the diameter range must extend past what screw anchors cover (M6–M16 vs M6–M24 in the family bands), or the seismic detail already references a qualified expansion system. Both install fast and load immediately; the wedge adds a torque pass and buys higher, more widely qualified capacity. For the lightest repetitive fixings the screw anchor stays cheaper per hole.

Why is hole tolerance called out as the governing risk?

The expansion mechanism converts nut torque into wedge pressure against the hole wall, so the clamp load is a function of hole-diameter tolerance and applied torque. An oversize hole — a worn bit, a reamed hole — means the wedge cannot develop pressure; an under-cleaned hole means the dust layer pads it. Both failure modes leave the anchor loose before any load arrives, which is why the installation specification should name the drill diameter, the torque value and the cleaning method, and why qualification testing (ACI 355.2, EAD 330232) runs with those variables controlled.

What is the MOQ and lead time for these anchors?

The minimum order quantity is 500–1,000 pieces. Standard production runs 15–30 days. Bent or custom geometries are quoted against the drawing.

What should an RFQ for these anchors state?

State the anchor family and designation, diameter, embedment or length, base-material condition (cracked or uncracked concrete, moisture), coating, and quantity per size — plus destination country and any required documents such as a mill test certificate. If your detail carries an ETA or ICC-ES report number, quote it so the anchor matches the approval.
