FH & FHS Self-Clinching Threaded Studs

Self-clinching threaded studs, FH (carbon steel) and FHS (stainless steel) — permanently mounted external threads for thin sheet, metric M2.5 to M8, with controlled clinching holes within 0.08 mm of nominal and minimum sheet thicknesses 1.0–2.4 mm by size.

Specifications

An FH or FHS self-clinching stud provides a permanently mounted external thread in thin sheet metal: the stud is pressed into a controlled clinching hole and the sheet material cold-flows around the knurled shank, locking the stud in place — no welding, no through-hole. FH is the carbon-steel series and FHS the stainless-steel series. A typical designation reads FH-M4-10: an FH carbon-steel stud with an M4 x 0.7 external thread and a 10 mm nominal length. The collected installation table runs metric M2.5 x 0.45 through M8 x 1.25, each with its minimum sheet thickness (1.0 to 2.4 mm), mounting-hole diameter (within +0.08/0 of the nominal thread size), clinch-head diameter H (4.1 to 9.6 mm), maximum unthreaded length F, and minimum edge distance. The mounting hole is a controlled clinching hole even though its diameter sits close to the nominal thread size — a standard bolt clearance hole must not be substituted.

Series FH (carbon steel) and FHS (stainless steel) — externally threaded self-clinching studs
Thread range M2.5 x 0.45, M3 x 0.5, M4 x 0.7, M5 x 0.8, M6 x 1.0, M8 x 1.25 — external threads
Minimum sheet thickness (by size) 1.0 mm (M2.5–M5); 1.6 mm (M6); 2.4 mm (M8)
Mounting hole (by size) Ø2.50, 3.00, 4.00, 5.00, 6.00, 8.00 mm — each +0.08/0 (a controlled clinching hole, not a clearance hole)
Clinch-head diameter H (by size) 4.1, 4.6, 5.9, 6.5, 8.2, 9.6 mm (M2.5 → M8)
Unthreaded length F, maximum (by size) 1.95, 2.10, 2.40, 2.70, 3.00, 3.70 mm (M2.5 → M8) — F provides no complete thread engagement, so deduct it when calculating usable thread length
Minimum edge distance (by size) 5.4, 5.6, 7.2, 7.2, 7.9, 9.6 mm (M2.5 → M8)
Designation FH-M4-10 = FH carbon-steel stud, M4 x 0.7 external thread, 10 mm nominal length

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (FH & FHS Self-Clinching Threaded Studs) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantities and lead times for this family are confirmed at quotation — send your sizes, grades and quantities on the RFQ and the quote will carry a firm schedule. Sample availability is confirmed with the quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I drill a normal clearance hole for a self-clinching stud?

The clinch head locks by cold-flowing the sheet material into the shank geometry, which only works if the hole is the controlled clinching size from the installation table — within +0.08/0 of the nominal thread diameter (for example Ø4.00 +0.08/0 for M4). A standard bolt clearance hole is larger and leaves nothing for the sheet to flow into, so the stud would spin or pull out. Drill the clinching hole, not a clearance hole.

How much thread length does an FH stud actually give me?

The nominal length L includes the unthreaded region F next to the clinch head, which does not provide complete thread engagement. The collected table lists F maximum per size — 2.40 mm at M4, 3.00 mm at M6, 3.70 mm at M8. Usable full-engagement thread is roughly L minus F; when that matters for the assembly, state the required minimum full-thread length on the drawing and confirm it at quotation.

What should an RFQ for these self-clinching standoffs or studs state?

State the series (FH/FHS stud, SO/SOS/SOA through-hole standoff, or BSO/BSOS/BSOA blind standoff), thread size and pitch (for example M4 x 0.7), nominal length L, sheet material and thickness, and — for blind standoffs — the required effective thread depth and the maximum permitted screw penetration. Quantity per size and destination country complete the RFQ. Commercial terms are confirmed at quotation.
