External Self-Locking Retaining Rings — Thrust Load (Inch Series)
External self-locking retaining rings for inch shafts 3/32 to 1 in: ring thickness, ring diameter, groove margin and static thrust load per shaft size — the push-on (grooveless) ring ladder.

Specifications
Self-locking external rings push onto the shaft and hold by ring tension alone — no groove to machine, at the cost of a lower thrust rating than a grooved ring of the same size. The collected inch ladder runs shaft diameters 0.093-0.095 through 0.998-1.002 in: ring thickness steps 0.010 to 0.015 in at the mid sizes, ring diameter D runs from 0.250 to 1.250 in (roughly 2.5x the shaft — the "shoulder" the ring creates), margin E is 0.040 in on the thin rings and 0.060 on the 0.015 rings, and the static thrust load column tops out lower than a grooved ring would: 15 lb at 3/32, 40 lb at 1/4, 50 lb through 3/4, 60 lb at 1 in. The load column is labeled by the source's grid as the groove column value — the printed ladder is the ring-on-ungrooved-shaft rating, which is the whole point of the self-locking series. Where a joint needs hundreds of pounds of axial holding, that is the grooved ring's job; where a groove cannot be cut (hardened shafts, thin sections, plastic assemblies), this is the ring that makes the shoulder anyway.
| Series / scope | External self-locking (push-on) retaining rings, inch shafts 0.093 to 1.002 in — ring dimensions and static thrust load per shaft size band (Min./Max. D) |
|---|---|
| Ring thickness T | 0.010 in through the 1/4-in sizes (one 0.249 row also 0.010), 0.015 in from the 0.239 size up — as printed, non-monotonic T rows carried verbatim |
| Ring diameter D / margin E | D 0.250 (0.093 shaft) to 1.250 (1.000 shaft); E 0.040 on 0.010 rings, 0.060 on 0.015 rings |
| Static thrust load | 15 lb at 3/32 shaft, 35 at 3/16-0.220, 40 at 1/4-3/8, 50 at 7/16-3/4, 55 at 7/8, 60 lb at 1 in — the ring-on-plain-shaft rating, per the collected grid |
| Not tabulated | Grooved external rings (DIN 471 / inch grooved identities), rotation-speed limits, material/tempers, removal methods — per RFQ |
Materials
- Push-on rings are spring-temper carbon or stainless steel, selected by shaft size; the thrust figures assume the ring seats square on a plain shaft of the tabulated diameter. Overload a self-locking ring and it creeps off — if the application sees shock or sustained axial loads near the rating, step up to a grooved ring and cut the groove. Specify material and shaft tolerance on the RFQ; the collected page carries dimensions and static load only
Ordering & documentation
Documents
Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.
Quotation
- The fastener family (External Self-Locking Retaining Rings — Thrust Load (Inch Series)) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
- Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
- Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
- Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.
Sample & supply
Minimum order quantities and lead times for this family are confirmed at quotation — send your sizes, grades and quantities on the RFQ and the quote will carry a firm schedule. Sample availability is confirmed with the quotation.
Storage & shipping
Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.
Frequently asked questions
What does a self-locking ring trade away to avoid the groove?
Mostly thrust capacity, and it is visible in the collected ladder: a 1-in shaft self-locking ring is rated 60 lb static, while a grooved external ring of similar shaft size carries its load through a machined shoulder — typically an order of magnitude more. The self-locking ring earns its place where machining is the expensive or impossible part: hardened shafts that would need grinding to groove, thin-wall tubes, plastic or cast housings, and throw-away assemblies where installation speed beats rating. The 0.040-0.060 in margin E shows the other part of the trade — the ring grips a narrow edge of shaft, so end-play control is the ring tension, not a machined face. Use the ladder as the static ceiling, keep shock loads well under it, and move to the grooved series when the number stops closing.
Why do the thickness and margin columns step mid-ladder?
Because the ring has to stay springy enough to grip without yielding at assembly: as shafts grow, the ring circumference grows and the strip must thicken (0.010 to 0.015 in around the 1/4-3/8 in sizes, as printed) to keep the same radial spring per inch. The margin E steps with it for the same reason — the grip edge needs more section once the strip is thicker. Two rows around the step print in a non-monotonic order on the collected page (a 0.239 shaft band at 0.015 beside a 0.249 band at 0.010), carried verbatim and flagged: use the shaft size, not the row order, to pick the ring. The grip behavior you should expect at assembly — a firm push-on fit that does not need pliers — is identical either side of the step.
