Selection guidance

How parallel dowel pins and slotted spring pins hold a joint, what the tolerance classes and strength tables mean, and what to state on the RFQ.

Friction fit (DIN 7) versus spring fit (DIN 1481)

Parallel dowel pins join parts by friction: the pin presses into pre-drilled holes and the frictional forces between the pin and the material keep the assembled parts aligned, so the joint stays rigid. A slotted spring pin instead is hollow and split along its full length; its resting diameter is larger than the hole, so when inserted it compresses and then presses back against the hole wall — the fit tightens against shock and vibration.

The two types therefore serve different joints. For precise, rigid location, quote DIN 7 / ISO 2338 dowel pins; for joints that must survive shock, vibration or repeated insertion, quote DIN 1481 / ISO 8752 spring pins, whose dimension table also carries the recommended bore D2 and the single- and double-shear force per size (0.35–57.6 kN single, 0.7–115 kN double across the 1–13 mm series).

Tolerance class and material strength

DIN 7 pins are ordered by tolerance class as well as size: m6 and h6 bands are tabulated by diameter across the length ranges of the collected sheet. The nominal diameter series runs 1–20 mm (1, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20) with matching chamfer values r and c per size.

Steel dowel pins are designated by property class from 4.6 up to 12.9 — the quenched-and-tempered classes (8.8, 9.8, 10.9 at 425 °C minimum tempering, 12.9 at 380 °C) carry chemistry limits for carbon, phosphorus and sulfur. Stainless pins follow ISO 3506: austenitic A1, A2 and A4 in strength classes 50, 70 and 80, corresponding to 500, 700 and 800 N/mm² tensile strength. Quote the class your drawing names; where it is silent, the service environment decides between steel and stainless.

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (Pins) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantities and lead times for this family are confirmed at quotation — send your sizes, grades and quantities on the RFQ and the quote will carry a firm schedule. Sample availability is confirmed with the quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Available grades

Each pin standard has its own specification page — dimension series, shear tables, strength classes and RFQ guidance per standard.

Frequently asked questions

Dowel pin or slotted spring pin — which do I need?

A parallel dowel pin (DIN 7 / ISO 2338) is solid and locates by friction press fit — the rigid choice where parts must stay precisely aligned. A slotted spring pin (DIN 1481 / ISO 8752) is hollow and split along its length: it compresses into the bore and springs back against the hole wall, holding the joint against shock and vibration. Quote against the standard your drawing names; if the drawing names only "pin", state the hole size and the load case on the RFQ and the quote confirms the type.

Which materials and strength classes cover pins?

DIN 7 dowel pins are covered in steel property classes 4.6 through 12.9 (with the quenched-and-tempered classes carrying their tempering-temperature limits) and in stainless A1/A2/A4 to ISO 3506, whose strength classes 50/70/80 correspond to 500/700/800 N/mm² tensile. Spring pins (DIN 1481) carry their shear-force table by dimension — single and double shear. Match the material to the service environment and say which grade your drawing names.

What is the MOQ and lead time for pins?

Commercial terms for pins are confirmed at quotation together with sizes, tolerance class and material — state the standard designation, nominal diameter, length, tolerance class (m6 or h6 where the drawing names one) and quantity per size on the RFQ.
