ISO 8742 Grooved Pins, Third-Length Centre-Grooved
ISO 8742 third-length centre-grooved pins, d1 1,5 to 25 over a 32-length ladder (l 8 to 200) — the grooved pin whose grooves occupy only the middle third, for joints that must not be scored end-to-end.
Last updated: 2026-11
Specifications
The centre-grooved variant exists because a full-length groove set chews up everything it touches along the whole shank. ISO 8742 confines the three grooves to the middle third of the pin: the grip happens at the joint's centreline, while the outer thirds stay smooth — useful where a spigot must still slide, where the pin crosses a moving part, or where the exposed ends are a sealing or wear surface. The collected table runs d1 1,5 → 25 (tolerance h9 at 1,5, h11 from 10) with chamfer a 0,2 → 3, the double-shear row 1,6 → 444 kN, and a groove-diameter ladder of 32 lengths from l 8 up to l 200 — the longest length envelope of this batch, reflecting the designation's use in deep or stacked joints. The groove diameter per length runs 1,6 → 25,5 with the tolerance bands +0,05/0 (smallest), ±0,05 (mid), ±0,1 (from d1 12). Groove coverage beyond the middle third, material and finish are not tabulated — per RFQ.

Materials
- Material and finish specified per RFQ — centre-grooved pins commonly run spring or hardened steel; the smooth outer thirds can be specified where a sliding or sealed interface crosses the pin. State the joint stack-up at quotation: the grooved third must land on the shear plane, so the grip length fixes the pin length
Ordering & documentation
Documents
Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.
Quotation
- The fastener family (ISO 8742 Grooved Pins, Third-Length Centre-Grooved) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
- Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
- Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
- Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.
Sample & supply
Minimum order quantities and lead times for this family are confirmed at quotation — send your sizes, grades and quantities on the RFQ and the quote will carry a firm schedule. Sample availability is confirmed with the quotation.
Storage & shipping
Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.
Frequently asked questions
When does a third-length centre-grooved pin beat a full-length grooved pin?
Whenever the pin shank does more than just sit in the hole. A full-length grooved pin grips along its entire body — fine for a pure locator, but wrong when part of the shank must pass through a clearance feature, seal against a bore mouth, or let an attached lever pivot during assembly. The centre-grooved pin localizes the grip to the middle third: the grooved zone lands on the shear plane of the joint, and the smooth ends do no damage and take no wear. Check two things before ordering: first, that the joint's shear plane actually sits at the pin's centreline — otherwise the grooves miss the material they must bite; second, the length ladder — the collected table runs l 8 to 200, and the groove diameter (not nominal d1) sizes the fit per length, from 1,6 up to 25,5. Material, hardness and finish are not tabulated on this page and are quoted per RFQ; the full-length alternatives in this catalog are ISO 8740/8741 and the taper-grooved ISO 8744.
