Specifications
DIN 462 is the internal-tab lock washer for retaining nuts on shafts: its inner tongue sits in a keyway cut in the shaft and stops the washer rotating, while the outer tabs are bent up against the nut's flats after assembly — a positive mechanical lock that no thread friction provides. Machinists use it on bearing locknuts, gear-retaining nuts and any adjusted component that must not drift, because the lock survives disassembly cycles: bend the tabs back, remove the nut, refit, bend again. Frequently asked questions
How does a tab washer lock the nut, and can it be reused?
Mechanically, not by friction. After the nut is torqued, the washer's free tabs are bent up against one of the nut's flats; the internal tongue seated in the shaft keyway keeps the washer from spinning, so the nut cannot back off unless the tab is bent back first. That is also why tab washers are reusable in a way nylon-insert locknuts are not: bend the tab clear, remove and refit the nut, and bend a fresh section of tab against it. The limits are practical — the tab work-hardens after several bends, and the shaft must carry a keyway wide enough for the tongue, which the tabulated g dimension sizes.
