ASTM A354 Bolts (Grades BC and BD)

Quenched-and-tempered alloy steel bolts per ASTM A354 in Grades BC and BD — Grade BC at 125,000 psi minimum tensile, Grade BD at 150,000 psi, both tabulated in diameters up to 4 inches. The alloy grade for high-strength bolting beyond the structural size ranges.

Specifications

A354 covers quenched-and-tempered alloy steel bolts in two strength grades. Grade BC tabulates 105 ksi proof / 125 ksi tensile through 2-1/2 inches, stepping to 95/115 in the 2-5/8″–4″ range. Grade BD is the higher-strength grade at 120 ksi proof / 150 ksi tensile through 2-1/2 inches (105/140 above) — the same tensile class the structural A490 line sets, but tabulated in diameters the A490 size table never reaches. Both grades share the same diameter coverage: 1/4″ to 2-1/2″ and 2-5/8″ to 4″. That size reach is why A354 shows up in heavy equipment, towers and anchor-assembly work where the design needs more than medium carbon steel can guarantee in large diameters.

Standard ASTM A354 — quenched and tempered alloy steel bolts; Grades BC and BD
Material Medium carbon alloy steel, quenched and tempered
Diameter ranges 1/4″–2-1/2″ and 2-5/8″–4″ (both grades)
Grade BC — proof load, min 105 ksi (1/4″–2-1/2″); 95 ksi (2-5/8″–4″)
Grade BC — tensile strength, min 125 ksi (1/4″–2-1/2″); 115 ksi (2-5/8″–4″)
Grade BC — hardness Rockwell C26–C36 (1/4″–2-1/2″); C22–C33 (2-5/8″–4″)
Grade BD — proof load, min 120 ksi (1/4″–2-1/2″); 105 ksi (2-5/8″–4″)
Grade BD — tensile strength, min 150 ksi (1/4″–2-1/2″); 140 ksi (2-5/8″–4″)
Typical applications High-strength bolting in large diameters — heavy equipment, towers and anchor assemblies where the design load needs alloy steel

Materials

  • Medium carbon alloy steel, quenched and tempered

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ASTM A354 Bolts (Grades BC and BD)) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 1,000–10,000 pieces depending on size. Stock items run 3–7 days. High-strength and custom parts run 15–25 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between A354 Grade BC and Grade BD?

By required strength, then by finishing plan. Grade BD sits in the 150,000 psi tensile class — the same class as the A490 structural line — while Grade BC carries 125,000 psi with a proportionally lower proof load; both grades tabulate the same diameter ranges up to 4 inches. High-strength hardened alloy parts are the hydrogen-embrittlement-sensitive class, so where the bolts will be coated, confirm the coating process and any post-plate baking with the supplier before specifying Grade BD. If the design values allow it, Grade BC gives the same size coverage with more margin around embrittlement-sensitive finishing.

What is the MOQ and lead time for this bolt grade?

The minimum order quantity is 1,000–10,000 pieces depending on size. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; high-strength and custom parts in 15–25 days. Large diameters in this grade are less universally stocked than structural sizes; confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.

What should an RFQ for this bolt grade state?

State the standard and grade (ASTM A354 Grade BC or Grade BD), diameter and length, thread type, finish (plain, zinc, or hot-dip galvanized — with the coating standard named if the design calls one out), required certificates such as a mill test report per EN 10204 3.1, and quantity per size — plus destination country. Because both grades share the same diameter ranges, the grade letter, not the size, is what selects the strength level.
