ASTM A449 Bolts

Quenched-and-tempered medium carbon steel hex bolts per ASTM A449, Type 1 or Type 3 — 120,000 psi minimum tensile up to 1 inch, stepping down through 1-1/2″ to 90,000 psi at 3″. The large-diameter general-purpose grade where the structural A325 line ends.

Specifications

A449 is the strength class general construction and utility work reaches for when bolt diameters grow past the structural standard's range. In the overlapping sizes it carries the same minimums the grade chart tabulates for F3125 Grade A325 — 85 ksi proof / 120 ksi tensile through 1 inch, 74/105 from 1-1/8″ to 1-1/2″ — but its size table runs on to 3 inches at 55 ksi proof / 90 ksi tensile. It is supplied as Type 1 or Type 3. Joints designed under structural steel codes stay on A325, while pole-line, equipment and general fabrication work above 1-1/2″ diameter is where A449 is the grade that actually exists. As with every quenched-and-tempered grade, the minimums are size-dependent, so an RFQ should state diameter explicitly rather than quoting one strength number.

Standard ASTM A449, Type 1 or Type 3 — hex bolt
Material Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered
Proof load, min 85 ksi (up to 1″); 74 ksi (1-1/8″–1-1/2″); 55 ksi (1-5/8″–3″)
Tensile strength, min 120 ksi (up to 1″); 105 ksi (1-1/8″–1-1/2″); 90 ksi (1-5/8″–3″)
Hardness Rockwell C25–C34 (up to 1″); C19–C30 (1-1/8″–1-1/2″); B91–B100 (1-5/8″–3″)
Size coverage Strength tiers tabulated to 3 in diameter — past the 1-1/2 in limit of the F3125 A325 line
Typical applications General construction, utility and equipment bolting above 1-1/2″ diameter; structural-code joints stay on A325

Materials

  • Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ASTM A449 Bolts) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 1,000–10,000 pieces depending on size. Stock items run 3–7 days. High-strength and custom parts run 15–25 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

How does A449 relate to F3125 Grade A325?

In the sizes where the two overlap, the strength minimums are the same line: 85 ksi proof / 120 ksi tensile through 1 inch and 74/105 from 1-1/8″ to 1-1/2″, both quenched-and-tempered medium carbon steel. The difference is where each stops — the A325 heavy hex structural bolt is tabulated only through 1-1/2″ diameter, while A449 tiers run to 3″ at 55 ksi proof / 90 ksi tensile. Practically: if the joint is designed under a structural steel code, it calls A325; if the bolt diameter or the application is outside that frame — utility structures, equipment, general fabrication — A449 is the grade that covers it.

What is the MOQ and lead time for this bolt grade?

The minimum order quantity is 1,000–10,000 pieces depending on size. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; high-strength and custom parts in 15–25 days. Common diameters in this grade are widely stocked; confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.

What should an RFQ for this bolt grade state?

State the standard and grade (ASTM A449 with the type if the drawing names one), diameter and length, thread type (UNC/UNF or metric), finish (plain, zinc, or hot-dip galvanized where specified), required certificates such as a mill test report per EN 10204 3.1, and quantity per size — plus destination country. Because A449 minimums differ by size tier, always pair the grade with the diameter in the RFQ.
