DIN 479 Square Head Bolts with Short Dog Point
DIN 479 square head bolts with short dog point, M5 to M24 — the square head with a pilot dog point that locates the bolt in a reamed or drilled hole — with the full collected 10-size table: dog point d p and projection z, head geometry k/k 1, across flats and corners and the angle a.
Last updated: 2026-11
Specifications
DIN 479 pairs the square head with a short dog point: a reduced-diameter cylindrical pilot (d p) projecting a short length (z) beyond the shank. The dog drops into a corresponding hole or slot, so the bolt locates before the nut takes up — the clamp cannot walk, and the bolt cannot spin while the nut is run, which is the whole point on through-bolted joints where the shank is not threaded into the part. Between the dog and the head the source tabulates the chamfer/angle a, head height k with its k 1 under-head reference, across flats s and corners e, and the radius r. The collected table covers M5 to M24 — 10 printed columns, with across-flats variants labelled by the source as "M16 SW16", "M20 SW21" and "M20 SW22" (reproduced verbatim). Materials, property classes and finishes are not printed by the collected specification and stay per RFQ.
| Standard | DIN 479 — square head bolts with short dog point (pilot-located through bolts) |
|---|---|
| Series | M5 – M24 (10 tabulated columns; across-flats variants printed "SW16"/"SW21"/"SW22" by the source) |
| Tabulated geometry | Per size: pitch P, angle/chamfer a (max), dog point d p (max/min) and projection z (min/max), across corners e (max/min), head height k (nominal/max/min), k 1 (min), radius r (min), across flats s (max/min) |
| Function | Dog point engages the clearance hole or slot so the bolt locates and holds while the nut is torqued |
| Materials / strength | Not tabulated by the collected specification — per RFQ (property class per clamping load) |

Ordering & documentation
Documents
Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.
Quotation
- The fastener family (DIN 479 Square Head Bolts with Short Dog Point) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
- Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
- Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
- Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.
Sample & supply
Minimum order quantity is 1,000–10,000 pieces depending on size. Stock items run 3–7 days. High-strength and custom parts run 15–25 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.
Storage & shipping
Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.
Frequently asked questions
Why specify a dog point on a through bolt?
Because a plain shank through-bolt has to be held against rotation while the nut is torqued, usually with a second spanner on the square head in cramped space. The dog point removes that step: it seats in the hole (or a drilled recess) so the bolt cannot turn, and it centers the joint before clamping so parts do not shift as the nut loads. It also keeps the threads fully in the nut side — the reduced point cannot cut or jam at the hole mouth. Size the dog from the table: d p must be a running fit in your hole, and the projection z must be shorter than the second member is thick, or the dog bottoms before the head seats. Where the joint additionally needs a machined bearing face under the head, that is the DIN 480 form below; DIN 479 itself carries the standard forged square head.
What is the MOQ and lead time for this bolt type?
The minimum order quantity is 1,000–10,000 pieces depending on size. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; high-strength and custom parts in 15–25 days. Common diameters in this bolt type are widely stocked; confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.
