Specifications

The cup-point set screw is the workhorse shaft-locking screw: a hex socket drive, a full thread, and a cup-shaped point whose sharp circular edge bites into the shaft when the screw is tightened, holding collars, sprockets, pulleys and control knobs against rotation. The cup edge digs in on a small contact circle, which is exactly why it grips well — and also why it leaves a small mark on the shaft and holds less well against vibration than a ring-marked or knurled interface. The collected B18.3 table runs 24 sizes from #0 to 2 in and tabulates per size: the screw diameter with its thread length, the thread series options — UNC, UNF and, from 1/4 in up, UNEF — with threads per inch, the hex socket nominal size s, the minimum socket depth t, and the cup point diameter d z with max/min limits. Above 1-1/2 in the collected table lists UNC only, with UNF and UNEF dashes — a real supply consideration at the large end, not a typographic one. For point-style selection across the family: flat point for a finished seat against a flat or a shaft with a spot face, dog point to seat in a drilled hole, cone point for maximum bite in soft material — each has its own page on this site.

Materials / strength Not tabulated by the collected specification — per RFQ (hardness and finish per drawing callout; set screws are normally through-hardened)
Hex socket set screws, cup point (inch series) - threads, body diameter and point diameter (#0 - 1 1/2)All dimensions in inches. Labels follow the source grid: screw dia = basic screw diameter; UNC / UNF = threads per inch in the UNC / UNF series (a dash means the series does not cover the size); A max = maximum (basic) body diameter; C max / C min = maximum and minimum point diameter. The two columns carried in source order as C UNC / C UNF match the ASME B1.1 class 3A external major-diameter minima for the corresponding UNC / UNF pitch and are labeled accordingly. Values are carried verbatim, including leading-zero formatting. Socket sizes, key engagement and length ranges are not part of this grid.

  • Row 10 (1/4): the #10 UNC thread-limit cell prints .1825 where the ASME B1.1 class 3A minimum for 10-24 UNC is .1828 — carried as printed, not normalized; verify per RFQ against the governing thread standard.
  • Row 14 (1/2): the 1/2 size point-diameter minimum prints .207 while the published ASME B18.3 point-diameter minimum for 1/2 is .270 (the maximum .291 agrees) — carried as printed, not normalized; confirm per RFQ against the governing standard.
  • Row 18 (7/8): the 7/8 size prints 9 UNC threads per inch with thread-limit .8611, consistent with the 9UN series; the 1 in. and 12-thread sizes above follow the same UN-series pattern — carried as printed.

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ANSI B18.3 Hex Socket Set Screws, Cup Point) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What does the cup diameter d z actually control, and why does it have tolerance limits?

The cup is not a flat dimple — it is a circular cutting edge of diameter d z, and the edge is what bites the shaft. The max/min limits (at 1/2 in: 0.291/0.270 in) keep that edge inside a band where it is sharp enough to dig and broad enough not to wash out the shaft wall. A cup near max spreads the holding force over a wider ring and marks less but grips more gently; near min it concentrates the bite. Practically, d z is also the number to check when a reused hole stops holding: re-tightening on the same mark flattens the edge, and a screw whose cup has been re-seated several times holds a fraction of its fresh torque. If the joint will be re-adjusted in service, spec a flat point against a spot-faced flat, or a dog point into a drilled seat, and keep the cup point for set-once assemblies.

What is the MOQ and lead time for these screws?

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces per item. Stocked sizes ship in 3–7 days; non-stock diameters, lengths or finishes are quoted with a confirmed schedule. Common sizes in this designation are widely stocked — confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.
