Specifications

Thread callouts are a shorthand that only decodes with the right reference standard, and a drawing that mixes inch and metric, or pipe with machine threads, can span half a dozen standards. This reference chart — 61 entries — maps the common thread designations to what they mean and which standard governs them: the Unified inch family (UN constant-pitch, UNC coarse, UNF fine, UNEF extra-fine, UNS special, and the UNJ/UNR rounded-root variants with their radii spelled out), the metric M and MJ profiles with their references (B1.13M/B1.18M, B1.21M), the Class 5 interference-fit external and internal thread designations (NC5 and its NC5HF/NC5CSF/NC5ONF housing variants — the drive-in thread series detailed on our class-5 page), the whole pipe-thread zoo (NPT, NPTF dryseal, PTF-SAE short, NPS straight series, plus hose and gas threads with their CGA and MIL references), the British series (BSW, BSF, BA and the R/Rc/G pipe threads with their BS references), and the power-transmission forms (Acme centralizing and general purpose, Stub Acme, buttress pull and push types). The chart is the collected source's own mapping, carried verbatim — including its quirks: NC5 appears twice (external and internal sections), "Rc Rp" merges two designations in one cell, and DIN/JIS/ISO appear as markers with no reference standard ("-"). Use it as a designation decoder, then read the governing standard for dimensions and tolerances. Threads we supply against any of these series are quoted per RFQ with the drawing callout.

Coverage 61 designations: Unified inch (UN/UNC/UNF/UNEF/UNS/UNJ/UNR families), metric (M, MJ, MJS, UNM), Class 5 (NC5 external + internal, NC5HF/CSF/ONF/IF), pipe (NPT/NPTF/F-PTF/PTF-SAE/PTF-SPL/SPL-PTF/ANPT/NPSL/NPSM/NPSC/NPSF/NPSI/NH/NPSH/NHR), hose/gas (NFPA 1963, NGT/NGO/NGS/SGT), British (R, Rc Rp, G, BSW, BSF, BA), power transmission (ACME C/G, STUB ACME, BUTT, PUCH BUTT), special (AMO, AWWA, DIN, JIS, ISO markers)
Columns Designation, description as printed, reference standard (ANSI/ASME B-series, BS, ISO, CGA V-1, MIL P-7105B, C800-84); "-" where the source tabulates none
Related pages Class 5 interference-fit threads (torques and interferences) is detailed on its own page in this family

ANSI, ISO thread designations and references (61-row designation chart)As printed on the collected page: thread series designation, description and the reference standard (ANSI, BS, ISO). The chart is the source's own designation-to-reference mapping, carried verbatim — including its repeated designations (NC5 appears for external and internal Class 5 sections) and its "-" cells for DIN/JIS/ISO. Verification: re-fetched from the live page 2026-11-01, all 61 rows token-for-token equal to the x127 corpus.

Materials

  • A designation identifies the thread form; the material is a separate choice on every order — carbon-steel property class, stainless grade or alloy per the strength pages of this family. When you RFQ threaded parts, quote the full drawing callout (series, size, pitch, class/fit) exactly as printed; if the callout uses one of the special series here (UNJ, MJ, NPTF, Acme), say so explicitly — tooling differs from the common series and is quoted accordingly

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ANSI, ISO Thread Designations and References) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Why do pipe thread designations like NPT, NPTF and NPS look so similar but behave so differently?

Because the letter after NP is the whole story. NPT — National Pipe Taper — is the taper thread that seals by wrench-tightening metal-to-metal on the flanks; NPTF is the dryseal variant with flattened crests and roots designed to seal without sealant; the NPS series (NPSM, NPSC, NPSF, NPSI) are straight threads that do not seal on the thread at all — they are for mechanical joints or, in the dryseal fuel/intermediate versions (NPSF/NPSI), for sealing with a gasket or O-ring at a shoulder. The chart's reference column shows they even come from different documents (B1.20.1 vs B1.20.3 family). Substituting a straight for a taper thread in a pressure joint leaks; substituting NPTF for NPT usually works mechanically but not always with used fittings. Read the full callout on the drawing, match it exactly, and quote per RFQ — thread-series substitution on pressure work is not ours to assume.

What is the difference between UNR, UNJ and the plain UN series in the chart?

All three are Unified inch threads with the same dimensions; the suffix changes the root contour. Plain UN has the standard sharp-ish root; UNR mandates a rolled (smooth, radius not less than 0.108P per the chart) root that improves fatigue life without changing mating dimensions; UNJ goes further with a larger controlled root radius (0.15011P to 0.18042P, as the chart's description spells out) — and because the bigger radius consumes space on the mating internal thread, UNJ bolts and nuts are a matched system, common in aerospace. So a callout of 1/4-20 UNJ vs plain UN affects which mating parts and which inspection apply, not the wrench size. When a drawing carries UNJ or UNR, quote it verbatim: substituting plain UN threads would silently delete the fatigue requirement the callout exists to enforce.
