Specifications

NPT is the taper pipe thread that seals by interference: a 1-in-16 taper (1° 47′) drives the flanks together as the fitting wrenches up, and the thread compound or sealant fills the spiral leak path the metal-to-metal contact leaves. ASME B1.20.1 defines the geometry, and the collected chart carries it per nominal pipe size from 1/16 to 24 in — but its columns describe a gaging concept, not simple diameter limits: E0 is the pitch diameter where the external thread begins, E1 the pitch diameter at the gaging (L1) plane, L1 the hand-tight engagement (in inches and in threads), L2/E2 the effective-thread geometry, and the last column the basic minor diameter at the small end. Reading 1/2 in: 14 TPI, 0.07143 pitch, E0 0.75843, L1 0.3200 in (4.48 threads), E1 0.77843, L2 0.5337 in, E2 0.79179, small-end minor 0.7013 — the numbers a taper-thread gage and a threading die setup both work from. Two order-relevant notes live in the chart: E-values carry four to five decimals as the basis of gage dimensions (the source's own precision note — not an achievable manufacturing precision), and NPT is not interchangeable with NPSM (straight) or NPTF (dryseal) — sealing behavior differs. Pipe wall schedule and pressure class are piping decisions beyond the thread — per RFQ.

Materials

  • Sealant/compound choice and pipe material specified per RFQ — NPT seals with a compound on the spiral leak path; dryseal (NPTF) is a separate standard and a separate line

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ASME B1.20.1 NPT Taper Pipe Threads — Basic Dimensions 1/16 – 24 in) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

How many turns should a NPT joint make hand-tight, and why do the chart's L1/L2 engagement values matter when ordering or inspecting fittings?

The chart answers it per size, not as folklore: L1 is the hand-tight engagement — the length at which the thread is wrench-snug with gage-controlled geometry — and it is 0.3200 in (4.48 threads) on 1/2 in, 0.4000 in on 1 in, 0.7660 in on 3 in. Field practice of "about four to five threads hand-tight" on small sizes is just L1 read aloud; the chart's value per size is the defensible one, because over-engaging past L1 plus the L2 effective length bottoms the thread and can crack the fitting, while under-engaging leaves the seal path unmade. When ordering or receiving fittings, the L/E geometry is what a taper-thread gage checks: a plug gaged to L1 tolerance is the acceptance test — the chart's E-values to four or five decimals exist to define that gage (the source itself notes the precision is a gage basis, not a machining target). Two traps worth naming: NPT is not NPTF — a dryseal fitting deforms the flanks to seal without compound and is not interchangeable in sealing behavior even where it threads up; and thread compound is part of the seal design on general-purpose NPT, so specify it. For pressure-temperature ratings and schedule pairing, that is piping engineering — per RFQ with the fitting and pipe called out.

What is the MOQ and lead time for threaded parts on this standard?

The minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; non-stock items are confirmed at quotation. Common thread sizes on this standard are widely stocked; confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.
