Specifications

British Standard Pipe threads are the Whitworth-form family (55° flanks, rounded crests) that dominates plumbing and fluid power outside the North American NPT world — and the naming trap is the size: a "1/4 in BSP" fitting has a 13.157 mm major diameter, nothing to do with a 1/4 UNC bolt or a 1/4 NPT fitting. The collected chart prints the geometry per nominal size from 1/16 to 6: TPI (28 down to 11), pitch, thread height, and the major/pitch/minor diameters (1/4 in: 13.157 / 12.301 / 11.445 mm). One geometry serves two standards: ISO 228's parallel thread (BSPP, designated G) seals on a face or gasket at the fitting end — washer-flange fittings — while ISO 7's taper variant (BSPT, designated R) seals on the thread flanks with compound, the same sealing concept as NPT but a different flank angle and crest form, which is why BSP and NPT hardware must never be mixed even where sizes look adjacent (a 1/2 BSP at 14 TPI/55° against a 1/2 NPT at 14 TPI/60° threads up ruinously and does not seal). The source flags that the ladder has no 5/8 BSP size (footnote on the table below) and its quick-answer table is a subset of the ladder — one geometry, two sealing philosophies; pressure ratings and gasket selection are per RFQ.

Standard ISO 228 — parallel BSPP threads (G designation) and ISO 7 — taper BSPT threads (R designation); Whitworth form, 55° flank angle, rounded crests
Size range Nominal sizes 1/16 – 6, 14 rows; TPI 28 down to 11; dimensions in millimetres
Tabulated geometry (mm) Per row: TPI, pitch, height of thread, major/pitch/minor diameters; example 1/4: 19 TPI, 1.337 pitch, 0.856 height, 13.157 / 12.301 / 11.445
Size naming BSP designations are nominal pipe sizes — the actual major diameter differs (1/8: 9.728 mm, 1/2: 20.955 mm); never cross-match BSP to UNC or NPT by name
Sealing variants / ratings Parallel (face/gasket seal) vs taper (thread+compound seal) is the BSPP/BSPT split; pressure ratings, gaskets and NPT interchange are not tabulated — per RFQ
ISO 228 (BSPP/G) and ISO 7 (BSPT/R) British Standard Pipe threads — per-size dimensions (mm)All dimensions in millimetres. Whitworth thread form, 55° flank angle, rounded crests. BSP sizes are nominal designations, not the outside diameter. Height of thread per size; major/pitch/minor diameters tabulated per nominal size from 1/16 to 6. The source also prints a six-size quick-answer table (1/8 – 1) identical to the corresponding rows here — one table serves both. The source ladder omits a 5/8 row (see flagged footnote).

  • Row 1 (1/16): The source notes 5/8 BSP is not carried in standard ISO 228 / ISO 7 tables; the ladder steps 1/2 → 3/4 with no 5/8 row. Verify the fitting standard or measure OD and TPI to identify non-standard sizes.
BSPP (G) parallel pipe threads — full ISO 228-1 ladder 1/16 to 6 (mm), per-size major/pitch/minor diametersAll dimensions in millimetres. This fuller ISO 228-1 ladder (collected 2026-10-30 from the source's BSPP chart) supersedes the earlier captured subset above: it includes the 5/8, 7/8, 1 1/8, 1 3/4, 2 1/4, 2 3/4, 3 1/2, 4 1/2, 5 and 5 1/2 sizes the shorter ladder omitted, and confirms the geometry (TPI, pitch, major/pitch/minor) row-for-row where the two overlap. Whitworth form, 55° flanks, rounded crests; parallel (G) threads do not seal on the flanks — sealing is at a face or gasket outside the thread (ISO 228-1). External threads take tolerance class A or B on the pitch diameter (per the standard's designation rules).

Materials

  • Fitting material, gasket/O-ring selection and sealant specified per RFQ — BSPP seals at the face, BSPT on the flanks; state which when quoting

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ISO 228 / ISO 7 British Standard Pipe Threads — BSPP (G) / BSPT (R) Dimensions 1/16 – 6 (mm)) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

BSPP and BSPT share the same thread geometry — so what differs, and why can't BSP fittings mate with NPT?

The geometry is shared — the collected chart's one set of diameters serves both — and the difference is the sealing philosophy. BSPP (ISO 228, G) is cut parallel: the thread provides mechanical clamping only, and sealing happens at the fitting's face against a bonded washer, O-ring or metal gasket — which makes BSPP joints repeatable and reusable, the reason hydraulics and instrumentation prefer it. BSPT (ISO 7, R) is cut on the same 1-in-16-type taper concept as NPT: flank interference plus sealant makes the joint, so it suits welded-adjacent plumbing and less-frequently-disturbed runs. Neither parallelism nor taper is an option to choose by feel — the mating port decides. Against NPT the incompatibility is hard geometric: BSP runs the 55° Whitworth form with rounded crests at 14 or 11 TPI on its sizes; NPT runs 60° sharp-ish forms at its own TPI ladder. A 1/2 BSP against a 1/2 NPT starts together (both 14 TPI), binds after a turn or two, wrecks both threads and never seals — the most common fitting-counter error where the two worlds meet. The practical discipline: identify fittings by measuring OD and TPI against the chart (the size names lie — "1/4 BSP" is 13.157 mm major), and never adapt BSP to NPT with sealant and force.

What is the MOQ and lead time for threaded parts on this standard?

The minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; non-stock items are confirmed at quotation. Common thread sizes on this standard are widely stocked; confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.
