Roll Form Tap Drill Chart — Unified Threads (UNC/UNF/UNEF/UN) at 65% Thread, 0-80 to 2-4.5, inch

Thread-forming (roll) tap hole sizes for Unified inch threads — 165 thread rows precomputed at 65% full thread with drill oversize included, each with theoretical hole size, selected drill, drill decimal, oversize allowance and expected hole, transcribed row-for-row from the collected chart.

Roll Form Tap Drill Chart — Unified Threads (UNC/UNF/UNEF/UN) at 65% Thread, 0-80 to 2-4.5, inch in an industrial setting

Specifications

Roll tapping forms the thread by displacing material instead of cutting it — no chips, stronger threads with a work-hardened flank, and no chip evacuation problem in blind holes. The price is that the hole must be sized for flow, not for cutting: the forming tap pushes material outward into the thread form, so the hole is larger than any cut-tap drill and depends on the percentage of full thread you want. The collected chart is precomputed at 65% thread — the common production compromise between tap torque and thread strength — with drill oversize included: hole size = basic tap O.D. − 0.0068 × (% full thread) / TPI, then a letter/number/fraction drill is picked and its expected oversize added. Reading rows: 1/4-20 UNC forms at 0.2279 in theoretical, drill #1 (0.2280), expected hole 0.2312 in; 10-32 UNF theoretical 0.1762, drill #17, expected 0.1759; 1/2-13 UNC theoretical 0.4660, drill 15/32, expected 0.4732 in. The ladder runs from 0-80 UNF up to 2-4.5, crossing UNC, UNF, UNEF, constant-pitch UN and a few UNS sizes in source order — one chart for the whole unified forming job. What it does not decide: whether your material forms at all (roll tapping needs ductile material — it is for steels, aluminum, brass, not gray cast iron), the exact percent of thread for your strength case, and the forming lubricant; those are process and RFQ decisions. The source's printed expected-hole values occasionally sit below its own theoretical value (flagged on the table) — reproduced verbatim.

Method Roll form (thread forming) tap drilling — theoretical hole size = basic tap O.D. − 0.0068 × (% full thread) / TPI (Machinery's Handbook chart method), precomputed at 65% full thread with drill oversize included
Coverage 165 thread rows: Unified inch threads from 0-80 UNF to 2-4.5, spanning UNC, UNF, UNEF, constant-pitch UN and UNS sizes in source order
Per-row data (in) Theoretical hole size, selected drill (letter/number/fraction), drill decimal equivalent, drill oversize allowance, expected hole size — examples: 10-32 UNF → drill #17, expected 0.1759; 1/4-20 UNC → drill #1, expected 0.2312; 1/2-13 UNC → drill 15/32, expected 0.4732
Why not cut-tap drills Forming displaces material into the thread — a cut-tap drill size leaves the hole undersized, over-loads the forming tap and breaks it (source warning, reproduced)
% thread / material suitability / lubricant Chart is fixed at 65%; other percentages and material-formability calls are not tabulated — per RFQ (state alloy, hardness and thread % requirement)
Roll form (thread forming) tap drill chart — Unified threads, precomputed at 65% thread with drill oversize includedAll dimensions in inches. Roll tapping forms threads by displacing material (no chips), so cut-tap drill sizes do not apply — the theoretical hole size here is basic tap O.D. − 0.0068 × (% full thread) / TPI (Machinery's Handbook chart method), precomputed at 65% full thread. "Drill" is the letter/number/fraction drill selected; "Drill dec" its decimal equivalent; "Expected hole" = drill decimal + expected drill oversize. Note the source quirk: for many small sizes the printed Expected hole sits slightly BELOW the theoretical hole size even though oversize is included — reproduced verbatim. Thread tokens with embedded spaces (e.g. "1 1/16-12") are reproduced as printed. Method and exceptions: FED-STD-H28/2B-1991; modern practice selects the drill to land the hole between the standard's minimum and maximum internal minor diameters rather than by percent-of-thread alone.

  • Row 165 (2-4.5): Thread designation printed "2-4.5" with series UNC — a 4.5 TPI thread on a 2 in diameter is outside the standard UNC series; reproduced as printed, verify before ordering tooling.

Materials

  • Roll forming needs ductile workpiece material — plain and alloy steels, aluminum alloys, brass, bronze; hard or brittle materials (gray cast iron, some stainless) do not form cleanly. Confirm the alloy at RFQ before choosing forming over cutting taps

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (Roll Form Tap Drill Chart — Unified Threads (UNC/UNF/UNEF/UN) at 65% Thread, 0-80 to 2-4.5, inch) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the roll-form hole bigger than the cut-tap drill, and how do I pick between 65% and another thread percentage?

A cut tap removes metal to carve the thread, so the drill only needs to leave the right amount to carve away; a forming tap has nothing to remove — it must push enough material to fill the thread profile completely, which means starting from a bigger hole that leaves exactly the displacement volume the thread form needs. That is why the same 1/4-20 thread takes a #7 drill (0.201 in) for cutting but a #1 (0.228 in) for forming — the chart above is the forming side. The percentage of full thread is the lever trading torque against strength: a higher percentage makes a taller, stronger thread but the forming tap pushes far more material, torque climbs steeply and tap breakage risk follows; 65% — where this chart is fixed — is the widely used production point because thread strength rises faster than percentage at first and flattens out, so the last 20% of thread height costs disproportionate torque for marginal strength. If your joint calculation genuinely needs more (thin wall, high clamp load), that is an RFQ conversation: state the alloy, hardness, thread size and the strength requirement, and the forming percentage and hole size can be recalculated from the same formula before tooling is committed. And verify the material forms at all — ductile steels and aluminums form cleanly; gray cast iron and brittle alloys chip instead of flow and must be cut.

What is the MOQ and lead time for threaded parts and tooling referenced by this chart?

The minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; non-stock items are confirmed at quotation. Confirm the exact schedule against quantity, size mix and any tooling items at quotation.
