DIN 6911 Hexagon Socket Screw Keys with Pilot
DIN 6911 hexagon socket screw keys (hex keys) with pilot, sizes 3 through 27
Last updated: 2026-11
Specifications
DIN 6911 specifies the L-shaped hexagon socket screw keys with a pilot point — the pilot at the short arm helps the key stay engaged in deep or blind hexagon sockets and locates the tip before torque is applied. This reference tabulates the collected source's size ladder from 3 to 27 mm across-flats: for each key size you get the across-flats s with its tolerance band, the across-corners e band that decides whether the key enters a worn socket, the overall length L 1, the pilot length L 2 and the pilot diameter d p. The across-flats column doubles as the selector for the socket screw it fits — a DIN 6911 size 6 key is the tool for an M 10 hexagon socket head cap screw — while the L 1 / L 2 ladder tells you how much reach and leverage the tool gives you at that size. The tables are grouped in size blocks as the source prints them (3 - 6, 8 - 12, 14 - 19, 22 - 27), carried verbatim including the source's empty second header cell where its "Size" label spans the two label columns. Key steel grade and hardness of the tool are per RFQ.

Materials
- Hexagon socket screw keys are supplied in tool steel, commonly hardened; the collected table tabulates geometry only, so grade and hardness are quoted per RFQ
Ordering & documentation
Documents
Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.
Quotation
- The fastener family (DIN 6911 Hexagon Socket Screw Keys with Pilot) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
- Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
- Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
- Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.
Sample & supply
Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.
Storage & shipping
Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.
Frequently asked questions
Which DIN 6911 key size fits my socket head cap screw?
The key size equals the across-flats of the screw's hexagon socket, and for the common metric socket screw ladder the pairing is fixed: M 5 takes a 4 mm key, M 6 a 5 mm key, M 8 a 6 mm key, M 10 an 8 mm key, M 12 a 10 mm key, M 16 a 12 mm key and upward through the ladder tabulated here. Pick the key by the screw size on your assembly, then use the table for what the datasheet does not tell you: the tolerance bands (a size 6 key is 5.95 to 6 mm across flats, so it will still enter a socket worn to the max side of its own band) and the length/pilot geometry, which matters in deep countersunk sockets where the pilot length L 2 decides how far the key reaches before the arm bottoms out.
What does the pilot on a DIN 6911 key actually do?
The pilot is the short reduced-diameter point on the working end — d p sits well below the across-flats size (a 6 mm key has a 2.88 to 2.94 mm pilot). In a deep or blind socket, the pilot enters first and keeps the key centered while the hexagon portion engages, so you do not cam the key out of the socket and round the flats under torque; it also lets the key seat in sockets with a chamfered or slightly misaligned entry. That is why DIN 6911 keys are the choice for deep-reach socket screws in machine building, and why the table tabulates L 2 and d p alongside the lengths: if your assembly has a deep socket, check the pilot length against the socket depth before ordering the tool.
