Specifications

The inch socket head cap screw is the default fastener of precision assembly — jigs, dies, machine tools, enclosures — and this page carries its acceptance data across the whole ladder: twenty sizes from #0 (0.060 in body) to 1-1/2 (1.500 in body), each with body diameter, head diameter and head height max/min pairs, the hex socket nominal, key engagement and chamfer limits, read off the collected B18.3 chart. The ladder is uniform by design: head height runs half the nominal diameter (0.375 at 1/4, 0.750 at 1/2, 1.500 at 1-1/2), the socket is half the diameter again in across-flats terms (3/16 at 1/4, 3/8 at 1/2), and the wall thickness between socket and head wall shrinks to a few thousandths at the small end — which is why the chart tabulates it. Alongside the geometry sit the mechanical figures a design check needs: minimum tensile and yield per size in pounds for alloy and stainless, single-shear of the body, and the tightening-torque ladder — at 1/4-20 alloy that is 5,725 lb minimum tensile and 200 in-lb of recommended torque; at 1/2 alloy, 25,540 lb and 1,800 in-lb. Length tolerances close the page: a 1/4 screw 1 in long carries -0.03 in, the same size at 4 in -0.12 in. Reading notes carried from the source: the socket-strength pair of sub-columns prints duplicated "Min" labels (flagged on the table — read them as the wall-thickness envelope), and the stainless columns blank out above #10, because the common stainless ladder ends there — larger stainless sizes are per RFQ, not silent extrapolations. Finish, thread gaging and corrosion class are RFQ decisions.

Standard ASME B18.3 — socket head cap screws, inch series; 20-size ladder #0 through 1-1/2, UNC/UNF threads per size
Per-row data (in) Body, head diameter and head height max/min; top and bottom chamfer; hex socket nominal; key engagement; wall thickness envelope — e.g. 1/4: body 0.2500/0.2435, head 0.375/0.365, socket 3/16
Mechanical properties (lbs min) Tensile, yield, single shear and tightening torque per size, alloy vs stainless — 1/4 alloy: 5,725 lb tensile, 200 in-lb torque; 1/2 alloy: 25,540 lb, 1,800 in-lb
Stainless coverage Stainless strength columns run #1 through #10/1/2 in the collected charts; larger stainless sizes not tabulated — per RFQ (state size and corrosion environment)
Length tolerance −0.03 in (≤1 in screws, ≤3/8 in thread length) scaling to −0.20 in (7/8–1-1/2 screws, over 6 in long); full matrix on the page
Finish / gaging Not tabulated — per RFQ
ASME B18.3 socket head cap screws — head and body dimensions, #0 through 1-1/2 (inch)All dimensions in inches. Column labels follow the source grid, which flattens a rowspan header: body diameter, head diameter and head height each print a max/min pair; the hex socket prints a single nominal; key engagement prints max/min. The source prints two identical "Min" sub-labels over the wall-thickness pair — reproduced verbatim (see anomaly note). Tolerance on length block appended from the same page.

  • Row 1 (0): The source grid prints duplicate "Min" sub-labels over the last two wall-thickness columns (marked *); the original rowspan header most likely reads Max/Min. Values reproduced verbatim — treat the pair as the wall-thickness envelope, verify against B18.3 for critical design.

  • Row 1 (0): Size 0 prints "-" across both tensile UNRC pairs and both torque UNRC pairs — the source chart does not tabulate those figures for size 0; no value is inferred.

Materials

  • Alloy steel (quenched and tempered, ~180,000 psi tensile class through 1/2 in) and austenitic stainless (80,000 psi class) — the charts are geometry data and are material-independent; state alloy and finish at RFQ

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (Socket Head Cap Screw Dimensions — ASME B18.3 Inch Ladder (#0 to 1-1/2) with Mechanical Properties) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the alloy column matter so much more than the stainless one on a socket screw chart, and when is the stainless figure the one to design with?

The two materials answer different failure questions. Alloy socket screws are through-hardened to roughly 180,000 psi minimum tensile, so their column (5,725 lb at 1/4, 25,540 lb at 1/2, 238,800 lb at 1-1/2) is the one that sizes a structural or clamping joint — the screw thread, not the head, is the limit, and the tightening-torque ladder is derived from it. Stainless columns run at roughly half those figures (2,550 lb at 1/4) because austenitic stainless cannot be through-hardened by heat treatment — and the printed values blank out entirely above the small-to-mid sizes in the collected charts, because that is where the common product line ends, not because the material stops existing. Design with the stainless figure when the joint sees moisture, washdown, chemicals or elevated temperature where retaining properties matters more than peak strength, and upsize the screw to recover the load — or move to an alloy screw with a coating. What the chart cannot decide: the corrosion class (304 vs 316 vs A286), the finish, or whether a joint actually needs the alloy preload — those are application calls, so state the environment and load at RFQ.

What is the MOQ and lead time for socket screws referenced by these charts?

The minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; non-stock items are confirmed at quotation. Confirm the exact schedule against quantity, size mix and finish at quotation.
