6g, 6h or 4g6g — which tolerance class should a metric external thread order carry, and how does plating change the answer?

Start from what happens after threading. 6g is the world's default: its allowance below the basic profile (compare M10 x 1.5 — d max 9.968 at 6g versus 10.000 at 6h in the collected chart) exists precisely so a plated or galvanized bolt still threads into a standard 6H nut — the coating grows the thread into the allowance. So if the part gets coated after threading, 6g is usually the whole answer. 6h prints at basic size with no allowance: it is the class for bare precision parts, or for parts coated before threading (thread rolled after plating), where adding a coating allowance would leave the finished thread loose. 4g6g splits the difference in a different axis: it tightens only the pitch-diameter (flank) tolerance to class 4 while keeping the 6g major-diameter allowance — specified where repeated fit across lots matters, such as gaged assemblies and some aerospace-adjacent hardware. The cost side: the tighter the flank class, the more the process and gaging must deliver, which shows in price on precision work.
