Specifications

The dog point set screw carries a cylindrical pilot — diameter d p, projecting length z — past the flat end of the thread. Turned into a matching drilled hole in the shaft, the pilot becomes a positive shear key: the screw can be backed off and re-tightened and always lands in the same angular position, and the joint resists vibration far better than any friction-only point because the pilot, not friction, takes the torsional load. That is why dog points are the standard choice for rotating parts that get serviced — drive collars, indexable tooling, gears and pulleys that come off for maintenance — and for anywhere an adjustment must return to exactly the same setting. The collected B18.3 table runs 24 sizes from #0 to 2 in and tabulates per size: screw diameter, threads per inch across UNC, UNF and (from 1/4 in) UNEF, socket nominal size s, minimum socket depth t, and both dog dimensions with limits — pilot diameter d p (max/min) and projection length z (max/min). The pilot costs usable thread length, so the drilled-hole depth and the screw length have to be planned together. Flat, cup and cone point variants are covered on their own pages.

Materials / strength Not tabulated by the collected specification — per RFQ (hardness and finish per drawing callout; set screws are normally through-hardened)
Hex socket set screws, half-dog point (inch series) - threads, body diameter and point length (#0 - 1 1/2)All dimensions in inches. Labels follow the source grid: screw dia = basic screw diameter; UNC / UNF = threads per inch in the UNC / UNF series (a dash means the series does not cover the size); A max = maximum (basic) body diameter; P max / P min = maximum and minimum half-dog point length (value-matched against published ASME B18.3 half-dog lengths, e.g. #0 .040, #10 .127, 3/8 .250). The point-diameter and thread-limit columns of the same source grid are carried on the cup and flat point pages. Values carried verbatim.

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ANSI B18.3 Hex Socket Set Screws, Dog Point) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the dog point need a special hole, and what happens without one?

It needs a hole to work as designed: a plain-drilled, slightly clearance-sized seat of at least the pilot diameter d p and at least the projection z deep, in the shaft. With the hole, the pilot is a positive lock — repeatable angular positioning, vibration resistance, and a screw that can be removed and re-installed without losing its register. Without the hole, a dog point set screw behaves badly: the pilot bears on a narrow annulus of thread crest, the contact is poor metal on metal, and the holding torque collapses to a fraction of what the same screw achieves seated — plus the small pilot can burr a soft shaft. So the specification is a pair, not a single line: call the screw and the drilled seat together, and check the pilot diameter limits (read 1/2 in: 0.344/0.334 in) against the drill size actually used — an oversized hole lets the pilot wobble and gives back the register the point exists to provide.

What is the MOQ and lead time for these screws?

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces per item. Stocked sizes ship in 3–7 days; non-stock diameters, lengths or finishes are quoted with a confirmed schedule. Common sizes in this designation are widely stocked — confirm the exact schedule against quantity and size mix at quotation.
