ISO Tolerance Zones (Shaft and Hole)

ISO system tolerance zones in millimetres for the nominal dimension steps — external (shaft) zones m6 and h6 through h16, internal (hole) zones H7 through H14 — tabulated over/to from 0 up to 120 mm, the workhorse zones for fastener-adjacent machining: pins, drilled and reamed holes, slot and keyway widths.

Specifications

Fastener work lives next to the ISO fit system: a dowel pin is h6 or m6 on its outside, the hole it presses into is H7, a clearance slot is h14-width, and the drawings spell those zones as bare letter-number codes whose actual millimetre limits most people have to look up. This chart is that lookup, in the two tables the source prints: external measurements (shafts, pins, keys) with zones m6, h6, h8, h10, h11, h13, h14, h15, h16, and internal measurements (holes) with H7, H8, H9, H11, H13, H14 — each over/to nominal step from 0 through 120 mm showing the tolerance zone in mm exactly as the source prints the pair (e.g. m6 over 1 to 3: +0.002 +0.008; H7 over 3 to 6: +0.012 0). Read the lowercase zones as external (material outside the limit — a pin's diameter varies inside its zone) and uppercase as internal; m6 is the transition zone that makes a dowel a light press fit, h6 the precision clearance or line-to-line fit, and the coarse h-numbers the general sheet-metal and slot tolerances. The zones tabulated here are the fastener-adjacent selection, not the whole ISO 286 catalogue — other zones and larger dimension steps are quoted per RFQ against the standard. Where the drawing gives the fit code, this chart gives the mm; where it gives only mm, the fit code decision belongs to the designer.

External table Zones m6, h6, h8, h10, h11, h13, h14, h15, h16 over/to steps 0-1, 1-3, 3-6, 6-10, 10-18, 18-30, 30-50, 50-80, 80-120 mm; limits as printed, e.g. h6 over 6-10: 0 -0.009
Internal table Zones H7, H8, H9, H11, H13, H14 over the same steps; limits as printed, e.g. H7 over 10-18: +0.018 0
Convention Lowercase = external measurements (shafts/pins/keys); uppercase = internal measurements (holes); each cell prints the two limits, e.g. m6 '+0.002 +0.008'
Blank cells h14-h16 not tabulated for the 0-1 mm step, H14 not tabulated for 0-1 mm — as printed
Not tabulated Other ISO 286 zones (p6, n6, k6, e7...), steps beyond 120 mm, IT grade definitions — per the standard, quoted per RFQ

Blank cells print no value on the collected table (h14 to h16 not tabulated for the 0-1 mm step). Tolerance limit pairs read as printed, e.g. "+0.002 +0.008". Materials

  • Tolerance zones are geometry, independent of material — but the fit behaviour is not: a given H7/m6 press behaves differently in aluminum than in steel (differential thermal expansion, embedment). We supply dowel pins, parallel keys and precision fasteners in the zones tabulated here with inspection certificates; fit-zone selection on the drawing is confirmed with the designer where material couples into the fit

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (ISO Tolerance Zones (Shaft and Hole)) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the practical difference between an h6 and an m6 dowel pin?

Both are precision pins within a couple of microns over most steps — the difference is where the zone sits relative to nominal. h6 sits at or just under nominal (over 6-10 mm: 0 to -0.009), so an h6 pin in an H7 hole is a snug slide or line-to-line location fit that comes back apart. m6 sits just over nominal (over 6-10 mm: +0.015 to +0.006 per the chart's external table), so m6 into H7 is a light interference — a press fit that locates positively and resists falling out under vibration, at the cost of needing an arbor press and giving up easy disassembly. The selection is the designer's (driven by whether the pin ever needs to come out and what loads it sees); this chart's job is the numbers once the code is on the drawing. The practical caution: do not swap pin codes in the field to cure a loose fit — an m6 pin in a hole machined for h6 assembly can split a thin boss.

Why does the chart stop at 120 mm and skip zones like e7 or p6?

Because the source tabulates the fastener-adjacent selection: the zones that dominate fastener, pin, key and general machining callouts on hardware-sized work, over the dimension steps where those parts live. The full ISO 286 system defines a large grid of zones across many more steps — bearing fits (e7, g6), heavy press fits (p6, s6) and large-diameter work all exist but belong to machine-design territory rather than fastener-adjacent lookup. If your drawing carries one of those, it is still a normal quotation: send the fit code and dimension, and the limits are read from the standard rather than from this page. The same applies past 120 mm — the chart's over/to ladder ends where the tabulated source ends, not where the system does. Treat this page as the day-to-day lookup and the standard as the governing document; acceptance always follows the drawing's stated zone in mm or code.
