Hex Key Sizes Chart — Inch Series per ASME B18.3 (0.028 – 3 in Across Flats), Short & Long Series
Hex key and hex bit dimensions in inch series per ASME B18.3 — width across flats with tolerances from 0.028 to 3 in, across-corners limits, bit section dimensions in short and long series, bend radius, bit length and chamfer, transcribed row-for-row from the live-collected chart.

Specifications
Every socket head cap screw and hex socket set screw in the inch world is driven by one of these keys — and a worn or undersize key rounds the socket before the fastener is tight, so the dimension table is as much a quality-control document as a tooling catalog. The collected chart runs the full ASME B18.3 inch ladder: nominal across-flats sizes from 0.028 in (before 1/16) through every fraction — 1/16, 5/64, 3/32, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1 in — up to 3 in, each row carrying the width across flats with max/min tolerances (1/4 in key: 0.2500/0.2485), the width across corners limits (0.2845/0.2815 for the same key), the bit-section dimension pair (B) in max/min, the short-series and long-series dimension pairs (C), the minimum bend radius, the bit length and the maximum chamfer. The short/long series split matters for accessibility: a long-series key reaches a socket recessed below a shoulder or inside a housing, at the cost of tip alignment torque. From 1 1/4 in upward the source prints no long-series bit pair and gives the bit length directly (flagged on the table). Reading the table against a worn key: any measured across-flats below the printed minimum is a rounding hazard for the screw socket — retire the key before it wrecks the fastener. Matching key to screw: the key size follows the socket size called out by the screw standard (ASME B18.3 for socket head cap screws), not the screw diameter — though on this ladder they track closely. Tool steel grade, hardness and finish of keys and bits are not tabulated — per RFQ.
| Standard | ASME B18.3 — dimensions of hexagon keys and bits, inch series; nominal across-flats sizes 0.028 to 3 in, 29 tabulated rows |
|---|---|
| Width across flats (W) | Per row: nominal decimal, max, min — examples: 1/16 in → 0.0625/0.0615; 1/4 in → 0.2500/0.2485; 1/2 in → 0.5000/0.4975; 1 in → 1.0000/0.9970 |
| Width across corners (Y) | Max/min per row — the diagonal measure that wears first; example 1/4 in: 0.2845/0.2815 in |
| Bit dimensions (B, C, R, L, K) | B max/min (bit section pair), C short-series and long-series max/min pairs, R minimum bend radius, L length of bit, K maximum chamfer — long-series pair not tabulated from 1 1/4 in up (source prints "-" "-", gives L) |
| Tool steel / hardness / finish | Not tabulated by the collected chart — per RFQ (state key or bit form, series and hardness requirement) |

- Row 1 (-): Nominal designation printed "-" (source labels sub-1/16 keys by decimal only); same for rows 1-2.
- Row 23 (1 1/4): From this size (1 1/4 in) up the source prints "-" in both C long-series columns and a value in L (length of bit) instead — the long-series bit pair is not tabulated for large keys.
Materials
- Hex keys and bits are commonly through-hardened alloy tool steel; state hardness range and finish (black oxide, bright) at RFQ
Ordering & documentation
Documents
Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.
Quotation
- The fastener family (Hex Key Sizes Chart — Inch Series per ASME B18.3 (0.028 – 3 in Across Flats), Short & Long Series) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
- Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
- Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
- Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.
Sample & supply
Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.
Storage & shipping
Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I match a key to a socket screw, and what does the table tell me about rejecting a worn key?
Match by the socket size the screw standard calls out, not by the screw's nominal diameter: ASME B18.3 socket head cap screws assign the socket (across flats) per screw size, and the key's nominal across-flats must equal it — a 1/4-20 socket cap screw takes the 3/16 in key, while the 3/16 in key size is unrelated to the screw's thread. Where the table earns its keep is deciding whether a key is still good: measure across flats with a micrometer and compare against the printed minimum — a 1/4 in key measuring under 0.2485 in has worn past tolerance and will begin to round the screw's socket corners, and the across-corners minimum (0.2815 in for that size) is the faster tell because corner wear shows first. The short/long series choice is an access decision — the long series reaches recessed sockets at some cost in tip engagement rigidity — and from 1 1/4 in upward the source stops tabulating the long-series pair and prints the bit length instead (flagged). The three smallest sizes print no fraction designation, only decimals (0.028/0.035/0.050 in) — reproduced as printed. What the chart cannot tell you: tool steel grade, hardness and coating of the key — per RFQ.
What is the MOQ and lead time for threaded parts and tooling referenced by this chart?
The minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items ship in 3–7 days; non-stock items are confirmed at quotation. Confirm the exact schedule against quantity, size mix and any tooling items at quotation.
