DIN 7972 Tapping Screws, Countersunk Slotted Flat Head
DIN 7972 slotted countersunk flat head tapping screws, ST 2.2 to ST 6.3: 90° head geometry, slot dimensions and the commercial length ladder to 38 mm.
Last updated: 2026-11
Specifications
DIN 7972 is the flush-finish counterpart to the pan head: the same slotted tapping-screw thread with a countersunk flat head that sits below the sheet surface — the withdrawn source page tabulates ST 2.2 to ST 6.3 with head diameter dk max/min (12.4/11.97 at ST6.3), head height k, slot depth t max/min (1.75/1.2 at ST6.3) and slot width n max/min, plus the commercial length ladder 6.5 to 38 mm. The countersunk head demands the csk hole: a flush result is a hole-preparation outcome, not a screw property, and the printed k height tells you how deep the 90° seat must go. Fixtures, switch plates, guide rails and any sheet work where a proud head would snag or mark mate with this standard; the registered ISO 1482 carries the same form for new drawings.
| Standard / scope | DIN 7972 tapping screws, countersunk slotted flat head — ST 2.2 to ST 6.3, withdrawn (source label) |
|---|---|
| Head / slot | dk max/min 12.4/11.97 at ST 6.3; k 3.8; slot t max/min 1.75/1.2; n max/min as printed per size |
| Thread P | Per size from ST 2.2 to ST 6.3 — read from the grid (0.45 to 1.8 across the range) |
| Commercial lengths l | Ladder 6.5 to 38 mm; approximate mass per 1000 pcs (ρ=7,85 kg/dm³) tabulated |
| Not tabulated | Case hardness, csk hole preparation data, finish — per RFQ |
Materials
- Case-hardened steel, zinc-plated as the shop standard; A2/A4 stainless for wet or outdoor sheet work. Pair the order with the countersink tooling note if the sheets are unprepared — and state the sheet material and stack so the point form (forming or cutting) matches the duty, as on the whole tapping-screw family
Ordering & documentation
Documents
Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.
Quotation
- The fastener family (DIN 7972 Tapping Screws, Countersunk Slotted Flat Head) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
- Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
- Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
- Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.
Sample & supply
Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.
Storage & shipping
Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my DIN 7972 screw not sit flush?
Almost always the hole, not the screw. A countersunk tapping screw needs a 90° seat sized to the printed dk and k for its size — a plain drilled hole leaves the head standing proud by its full k height, an oversized csk buries it below the surface and the slot out of torque reach. Check the seat diameter against the dk max/min columns in the grid (11.97–12.4 at ST 6.3, for example) and the seat depth against k. On thin sheet without a prepared csk, either add the countersinking operation or switch to the pan-head DIN 7971, which was designed for unprepared holes. We size seats against the table on request.
The standard is withdrawn — what is the current equivalent?
The dimensional content of DIN 7972 lives on in the ISO tapping-screw family — ISO 1482 is the slotted countersunk flat head equivalent, and the registered ISO tapping-screw pages carry the cross-recessed siblings — so a new drawing should name the ISO number. For replacement work, order by DIN 7972 plus ST size and length exactly as the legacy BOM prints; the parts are supplied against the historical call-out without issue. Send the drawing extract if the head form matters to the assembly (flush vs raised), because the equivalents differ in small head-height details, and we confirm equivalence per size before quoting.
