DIN 6885 Parallel Keys — Deep Pattern in an industrial setting

Specifications

DIN 6885 defines the square and rectangular parallel keys that transmit torque between shaft and hub, together with the keyway (keyseat) dimensions cut into both. This reference tabulates the deep-pattern series — the key sits deeper in the shaft than in the hub, the arrangement used for general machine building — across normal sizes 2 x 2 up to 100 x 50, in the source's size-group grids. For each key size you get the hub-groove keyway depth d 1 range, the shaft-groove width b under the P9 and N9 keyway tolerances, the shaft-groove depth t 1, the hub-groove width b 1 under P9 and JS9, and the hub-groove depths t 2 in both the loose and tight fits. The toleranced widths are the part that matters at assembly: P9 is the tight keyway fit, N9 the clearance one on the shaft side and JS9 the symmetric hub fit — the grids reproduce the source's tolerance bands verbatim, including its formula cells for the bore diameter d 2 on the deep-pattern keyway. Material, hardness and finish of the key steel are per RFQ; our supply covers key steel and machined keys to drawing.

Standard DIN 6885 (parallel keys with deep-pattern keyways), as tabulated by the collected source
Key cross-sections covered 2 x 2, 3 x 3, 4 x 4, 5 x 5, 6 x 6, 8 x 7, 10 x 8, 12 x 8, 14 x 9, 16 x 10, 18 x 11, 20 x 12, 22 x 14, 25 x 14, 28 x 16, 32 x 18, 36 x 20, 40 x 22, 45 x 25, 50 x 28, 56 x 32, 63 x 32, 70 x 36, 80 x 40, 90 x 45, 100 x 50
Keyway width tolerances Shaft groove b: P9 and N9; hub groove b 1: P9 and JS9 — tolerance bands per grid as printed
Groove depths Shaft t 1 (min = nominal, max printed), hub t 2 loose and tight (min = nominal, max printed)
Counterbore d 2 Printed as formula cells (d1 + …) in the source, carried verbatim
Not tabulated Key material, hardness, key-steel lengths, chamfer/edge radii — per RFQ
DIN 6885 parallel keys and keyways, deep pattern — normal sizes 2 / 3 / 4As printed on the collected page: key (d x h) with hub-groove keyway depth d 1 ladder, shaft-groove width b (P9/N9), shaft-groove depth t 1, hub-groove width b 1 (P9/JS9) and hub-groove depths t 2 (loose / tight), per normal-size group. The two-row label column is the source's rowspan layout, carried as separate leading cells; empty label cells reproduce the source's merged cells. d 2 rows print formula cells (d1 + …) verbatim. Verification: re-fetched from the live page 2026-11-01, all 9 grids x 21 rows token-for-token equal to the live-DOM extraction.

Materials

  • Parallel keys are supplied in key steel, typically to the tenant supply in common commercial grades; the collected table tabulates geometry only, so grade selection and hardness certificates are quoted per RFQ against the drawing you supply

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Shipments are backed by Mill Test Certificate (MTC), Dimensional Report, Salt Spray Test Report on request, with full batch traceability from raw material to finished product. Quality management follows the owner-confirmed compliance list: ISO 9001:2015, RoHS, REACH. Exact document sets are confirmed on the order.

Quotation

  • The fastener family (DIN 6885 Parallel Keys — Deep Pattern) plus the standard designation from your drawing — DIN / ISO / JIS / ASTM / ANSI, or a drawing for custom parts.
  • Size (diameter and length), thread type (metric or inch), property class or grade, and coating or finish.
  • Quantity per size and your target delivery date.
  • Destination country, and any required documents (for example a mill test certificate) so the quote includes them.

Sample & supply

Minimum order quantity is 10,000 pieces. Stock items run 3–7 days. Quantities or variants outside the standard range are confirmed at quotation.

Storage & shipping

Parts are packed for export and shipped factory-direct to buyers in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Store fasteners dry and protected until installation, and keep coated parts in their packaging until use; specific packing and preservation requirements can be stated on the order and confirmed at quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the deep pattern on this page and the standard DIN 6885 form?

DIN 6885 exists in two keyway-depth arrangements. In the deep pattern tabulated here, a larger share of the key's height sits in the shaft keyway (the shaft-groove depth t 1 is roughly 0.6 of the key height, with the hub taking a shallow groove), which suits long, heavily loaded shafts where the key is effectively fixed in the shaft. The shallow pattern reverses the split for hollow or thin-hub applications. The dimension grids on this page — d 1, t 1 and the two t 2 variants — are the deep-pattern values as the collected source prints them; if your drawing calls out the shallow pattern, confirm the keyway depths with us at RFQ rather than substituting from this table.

Which keyway tolerance should I call out for my shaft and hub?

The grids tabulate both families so you can match your drawing: on the shaft groove, P9 is the close fit used where the key is expected to stay tight (transmitting loads without sliding), while N9 gives more clearance; on the hub groove, P9 again is the close fit and JS9 is the symmetric tolerance used with a key that must slide axially or be removed for service. The tolerance bands are reproduced from the collected source per key size. What the table cannot tell you is which combination your application needs — that is set by your machine design, so name the tolerance pair on the drawing and we machine and supply to it.
